    1. Welcome to a world where flowers are grown for the lower classes and made for the wealthy, by magic, along with birds and sunlight and blades of grass; where a soldier is, literally, married to his blade; where Fate is king, and almost all-powerful. The first thing I thought on firing up the Kindle was that the writing was sheerly gorgeous, thickly embroidered with metaphor and simile like nothing else I've read and I wondered whether it would pall after a while. It didn't. There were one or two [...]

    2. I received this book from Librarything in exchange for an honest review. This is the most gorgeously written novel that I have read in a long time. Every sentence seemed to float like poetry, magic in itself. I don't usually like scenery or any sort of description, but reading this book was like eating sumptuous candy that you just want to savor for hours.I loved the protagonist, who to me was Dovizel. She was such a strong headed character that didn't bend to anyone's will except her own, and I [...]

    3. While looking for something different to read the description for this caught my eye, I was intrigued. After the first page I was hooked, after the first chapter I was entranced, but also harbored a secret fear that the lush, literary writing wouldn't be able to hold true for the hundreds of virtual pages of this novel. My fears were proven unfounded. For those who say fantasy cannot be literary I put forth this amazing work as the proof that would invalidate their arguments. For those who say t [...]

    4. This is a terrific book. The magic is magical, the characters are interesting and complex, and the author's world-building is excellent.Sylvia Volk creates a dazzling place: a city built over a sleeping dragon. In Sondolattis, illuminated books light your path, stone gargoyles are used as hunting dogs, and people can see heaven when the light is just right. The city is led by four kings and two queens who represent death and love and marriage and war. Phoenixes fly in flocks, the queen of love r [...]

    5. I discovered this book by happy chance, and by that, I really mean the search function in Smashwords. I was trying to find out which books would pop up given the words "dark" and "magic" and "erotic" (which tells you a lot more about my taste than you'd probably want to know, ever) and I found Let the Dragon Wake. (You could try this same search-phrase for yourself, if you're so inclined. At first, you will find books titled Hairy Peter and the Secret Chamberpot, but persevere.) The cover was re [...]

    6. Why I love Let the Dragon Wake (neither complete nor in order of importance): Magic romance, Dragons, Marr, Sex with sphinxes!I've read this book half a dozen times now, and I'm enthralled every time again. "Let the Dragon Wake" is set in an alternate Jerusalem, like Thomas Mallory meets Tanith Lee, with hefty doses of David S. Beagle. Magic is everywhere, and love is the most important theme of this book. What is love, can you earn it, can you give it away, what happens if you love something ev [...]
