      Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator He founded the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne Jones His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement.

    1. In 1994, I stumbled upon a self-portrait of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and my 18 year-old heart was smitten. I became curious about who he was and sought his writings when I arrived at college in a small town in Kansas the following year. This book contains letters mostly written to his brother and they are truly wonderful to read. He had a brilliant mind, full of love and torture (like all artists, no?).     2. I am reading an e-version of this at the Rossetti archive online. I will be reading this for a long time. I enjoy a few of the letters a day. Many of them make reference to a sketch or painting, so I'll click the link and examine the artwork. Or, perhaps there will be a reference to some acquaintence, and I'll go check out to find out who that was. The Rossettis are an interesting family. . normal and so extraordinary.
