    1. I read this (but could not force myself to finish, though I tried; I made it half way and decided life was too short to read something I disliked.) Appearing on the longlist for the Alberta Reader's Choice Award, I borrowed this book from the library hoping to read the longlist, in part because it wasn't very long and in part so I could decide if the books shortlisted aligned with my idea of which should be shortlisted.This book was not shortlisted.     2. What can I say? I was only able to finish 5 of the 7 stories. Even though the stories were eloquently written and beautifully edited, I did not have the heart to finish the last two.These stories are so intense, so detailed in capturing the madness that can descend on a mountaineer, or anyone obsessed by something.Being a hiker, I thought I'd love these stories. No, this is for someone who longs to unravel the inner workings of mountain madness.
