Erica Mason, an American woman living in Mexico, is torn between working to become an artist and the lure of the drug culture. Set mostly in the colonial city of Merida in the Yucatan peninsula, the story then moves among Mayan ruins, laid-back beaches and the cities of Beliz [...]

    2. In the 1970s, young artists, writers, and musicians expressed their independence and creativity in a variety of ways, so when Erica Mason, a young twenty-something, moved to Mexico to study, to explore, and to create, it was all part of the counter-cultural experience for some young people her age.She landed primarily in Merida, on the Yucatan peninsula, where other expatriates had converged, although her explorations extended to the locals, especially if they were good-looking and enjoying thei [...]

    3. This novel grabbed me and drug me back in time to Mexico in the 1970’s a time I knew well-the scruffy side of an exotic adventure. Come hang out with 23 year old artist Erica Mason as she tries to “paint sense” out of ancient cultures, empty affairs and a cast of characters that would make Fellini proud. 4. 3.5/5From my book review blogRundinne"Dahl’s novel is beautifully and artistically written with attention being given to even the smallest of details, as Dahl describes the country and the people. The novel is interspersed with Spanish on each page, lending to a more authentic experience of being in Mexico, combined with the intricate details of the foods, customs, and behaviours, one feels as though they too are in Merida or Oaxaca."

    5. Better World Books.Could not relate at all to the protagonist's sense of entitlement and her rampant drug use. If there was a plot in there, I didn't find it.
