    1. No bookshelf is complete in an early years classroom without "Billy's Bucket". This is a must have children's picture book. It was winner of the Children's Book Award. This review is in reference to the 32 Page Paperback edition. This is such a lovely, beautiful, light-hearted story that gets your brain thinking as to why a boy would want a bucket for his birthday. When Billy fills his bucket with water, it sets in motion mystical forces that defy the laws of nature. The premise of the story (a [...]

    2. Book review: Billy’s Bucket by Kes Gray and Gary ParsonsAge range: 5-8 years oldAll Billy wants for his birthday is a bucket. His parents take him to ‘Buckets-R-Us’, where there are buckets of every kind but Billy is looking for one particular bucket; a special bucket. After filling it with water, Billy discovers that his bucket is in fact an ocean with a rock pool, crabs and seaweed. Each time Billy looks into his bucket he sees his imaginative sea world with sharks, stingrays, clownfish, [...]

    3. All Billy wanted for his birthday was a bucket, to the amusement of his parents. They laugh at what Billy can see in his bucket – all sorts of under the sea creatures. “I told you not to borrow my bucket” said Billy. They should have listened and the consequences are literally huge! This books is brilliant in getting children to use their imagination and seeing what they can find in their own bucket. The pictures are really great, bright and colourful just like Billy’s imagination. A rea [...]

    4. More than a bike, new sneakers or a computer game, Billy wants a bucket for his birthday. His parents are skeptical, but agree to take him bucket shopping at Buckets R Us. When Billy brings the bucket home, he describes all the sea life that he observes swimming around inside. His parents laugh it off, but when they borrow the bucket, they have a whale of a problem on their hands.

    5. my daughter really enjoyed this book. I thought that was a good book for imaginations. my daughter did get a little upset that the boys parents kept laughing at him. I would recommend this book to others.

    6. Billy’s Bucket is a wonderful book written by Kes Gray to get children imaginations running wild. All Billy wants for his birthday from his mum and dad is a bucket, just an ordinary bucket. His parents try to persuade him otherwise but fail so they all take a trip to “Buckets-R-Us”. During their visit to “Buckets-R-Us”, Billy is very particular about what bucket he wants. Billy is delighted with his bucket and fills it with water as soon as he gets home. This is when the ‘magic’ ha [...]

    7. This delightful story is about a boy who wants nothing but a bucket for his birthday. Despite his parents trying to persuade him to get something else, he buys a very specific bucket and on getting home fills it with water. Billy sees all sorts of wonderful things in his bucket but warns his parents not to borrow his bucket. The story ends hilariously and teaches his parents not to borrow his bucket ever again.I think this story is good to read out loud to early years and for Key Stage 1. Childr [...]

    8. Billy's Bucket is based on a young boy, Billy, who really wants a bucket for his birthday. When he gets his bucket, his imagination runs wild. He tells his parents he has whales, scuba divers and mermaids in his bucket. Of course, they do not believe him and just think it is his wild imagination. Until one day, Billy's dad uses the bucket to wash his car and throws a whale on it. They never borrowed Billy's bucket againQuite a simple book but with great illustrations and a great source of imagin [...]

    9. Billy wants a bucket for his birthday, which his parents think is a strange thing to want. They try to persuade him to get something else but Billy only wanted a bucket. They eventually take Billy to get a bucket. When home, Billy adds some water to his bucket and when he looks in he can see all sorts of things (a rock pool, crabs, a shark, a mermaid and even a submarine). He tells his parents they cannot borrow his bucket when they ask to. But his dad does not listen and when he borrows Billy [...]

    11. This is great story for people of all ages. This story will inspire and encourage children’s imagination and the jokes are ones which will make adults laugh too. Its colourful illustration really captures what the author was trying to portray. The book can be used in many ways I had used this for my class to encourage imaginative writing where I stopped reading before Billy finds his bucket and let the children predict what they feel happened next. Some of the ideas the children had come up wi [...]

    12. a really sweet book about a little boy who knows exactly what he wants for his birthday--a bucket. While his parents don't quite get why it's so important to him, they let him pick one out anyway, and the adventures begin. As he navigates encounters with various sea creatures, Billy's "in the know" the whole time, while his parents kind of just laugh it offuntil they get a surprise at the end. It's a smart book, reminding us why kids' imaginations are so incredibly powerful, and why we as adults [...]

    13. I read this book to both my family storytime and toddler lapsit. The main character is a boy named Billy who really wants a bucket for his birthday. They look at many buckets at Buckets R Us, until Billy finds just the one he wants. Billy fills his bucket with water and tells his parents all about what he sees in his bucket. They are amused by his imagination of seeing whales, scuba divers, a mermaid and various fish. Billy tells his parents they must never borrow his bucket, but his dad doesn't [...]

    14. Read this with my reception class as part of out Underwater theme. The storyline is interesting and the illustration works well with the concept. I do feel that the story did go on for a bit and my reception children did get quite a bit restless on the carpet! Nonetheless I would recommend it to Years 1s and above because its a good book for the children to recall the various sea creatures and explore the characters!

    15. Ethan and I's main plan of attack at the library is to look at the spines and if it looks at all interesting we take it home- which leads to us checking out something like 40 books at a time. But, this one was a gem from our misguided library adventures. We also read this one multiple times every day for encouraging little imaginations!

    16. This is a very fun book to read. It allows students to use their imagination and be creative. This is a great book to allow students to get creative when designing what will show up in their bucket. I would use this in my classroom as a brain break, or relate it to a lesson. Students really enjoy this book!

    17. Billy surprises his parents by asking for a bucket for his birthday. His wish is granted and he amazes his parents with all the things he sees in the bucket. Lots of great sea related vocabulary and a surprise is in store. An exercise in imagination.

    18. I would love it more if the parents weren't so annoying - give the kid a present then immediately whine to borrow it for your chores. If they needed a bucket so bad why didn't they buy one for themselves too? But then, I guess this is a story point - listen to and respect your kids.

    19. Cute story of a little boy that wanted a bucket for his birthday, even though his parents try to convince him otherwise. He sees ALL kinds of watery life in his bucket, but then his dad encounters a huge whale while trying to "steal" his bucket. Fun story.

    20. Billy wants a bucket for his birthday. His parents are happy to get him a nice birthday present, but a bucket is what he wants so that is what he gets. Billy loves the bucket but cautions his parents not to borrow it. The big surprise at the end will delight readers of all ages.

    21. I love picture books with a twist (as my list of favorite children's books will attest), something a little unexpected. I think that usually means it goes over the kids head, but oh well, at least I enjoy reading it that way. This twist is more kid level, and it's funny.

    22. What a book for the imaginative thinkers. Who would have thought that asking for a bucket for your birthday could entail some of the most exciting things? Great for elementary students, it could even apply towards a science oceanography unit!

    23. I thought this book was really cute. It showed just how much fun you can have by using your imagination. The parents and the ending left me kind of confused, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

    24. This is a great book that I read once a month to my kids. The love how animated I get and it is great for them to see the imagination at work.

    25. Amelia loves this book and now has a new infatuation with buckets of all kinds. The story is definitely entertaining for both toddler and adults.
