I was very small when I saw my first dolphin, says zoologist Nicola Davies, recalling a seminal visit with her father to a dolphin show at the zoo Enchanted at the sight of what she called the big fish jumping so high and swimming so fast, she determined right then that she would meet the amazing creatures again in the wild, where they belonged And indeed she did as part of a pair of scientific expeditions, one to Newfoundland at the age of eighteen and another to the Indian Ocean a year later In WILD ABOUT DOLPHINS, Nicola Davies describes her voyages in a firsthand account filled with fascinating facts and captivating photographs of seven species of dolphins in action Nicola Davies s seemingly boundless enthusiasm for studying animals of all kinds has led her around the world and fortunately for young readers, she is just as excited about sharing her interests through picture books The zoologist s latest offering puts a decidedly quirky twist on her years of experience POOP A NATURAL HISTORY OF THE UNMENTIONABLE is a fun, fact filled guide to the fascinating world of poop across species As a zoologist, you are never far from poop the writer explains I ve baked goose poop in an oven with my dinner, looked at bat poop under the microscope, and had my T shirt stained pink with blue whale poop I was obviously fated to write this book The exceptional combination of Nicola Davies s zoological expertise and her first rate children s writing is apparent in her remarkable catalog of award winning titles Her first book with Candlewick Press, BIG BLUE WHALE, was hailed by American Bookseller as an artfully composed study offering language exactly appropriate for four to seven year olds and precisely the right amount of information In ONE TINY TURTLE, Nicola Davies s clear, compelling narrative follows the life of the rarely seen loggerhead turtle, which swims the oceans for thirty years and for thousands of miles in search of food, only to return, uncannily, to lay her eggs on the very beach where she was born The author s next book, BAT LOVES THE NIGHT, is a tenderly written ode to a much misunderstood flying mammal, the pipistrelle bat, while SURPRISING SHARKS winner of a BOSTON GLOBE HORN BOOK Honor Award contains unexpected facts about another one of the planet s most infamous animals. When she is not off on scientific expeditions, Nicola Davies lives in a cottage in Somerset, England, where she is lucky enough to have pipistrelle bats nesting in her roof.

    1. Extremely well written for an audience of 5th-9th grade students. In the first part of the book, the author clarifies what we know about climate change while also addressing common myths and misunderstandings. In the second part of the book, Gaia warriors are revealed--that is people who are striving to save the planet in noteworthy ways are being revealed. At the same time, these ideas are a call to action for the reader and many are within our reach of doing. These ideas are not the "same old" [...]

    2. Full review with teaching tools: unleashingreaders/?p=9694This is a text that takes the narratives of some global warming books and the information of others and combines them. I did not know what Gaia Theory was before this text, but now I know that it is the idea that we need to take care of our Mother Earth. “The Gaia Paradigm describes a productive confluence between scientific understandings of Earth as a living system with cultural understandings (ancient and new) of human society as a s [...]

    3. This climate change book takes a slightly different approach, following the Gaia idea, that everything on the earth is interconnected and that each thing on earth impacts the others. More than just a scare tactic, this book offers simple solutions anyone can do to help the earth. It nicely explains both how and why the earth is changing, and that there are no easy answers. The book, while quite long, is full of a variety of font styles and sizes, pictures, and plenty of color, while telling stor [...]

    4. Want to save the planet? This book is perfect for anyone (though young adult geared) who wants to know more about climate change and what WE ALL can do about it. Produced on recycled paper and including pictures, varied font styles, and graphs, the book provides a wealth of scientific data, quotes from the players, and resource info (websites, etc). It's sad to me that the U.S. is not doing more. Even though the book is published out of the UK, the facts on world regulation and education in rece [...]

    5. This was an excellent book. It missed being a 5 star because it simply didn't grab me by the throat and make me focus on the book. It is a series of interviews with people explaining climate change and consequences, but more importantly, what young people are doing today about it. Tons of web addresses and lists of organizations to look at or join. Really explains climate change in a way where everyone can understand it. Will review this review later. I'm tired and running late for work!

    6. Wish I had this book last month, when the life science teacher asked for books on environmental stewardship. I had a few to give her, but am happy that I have this to add to our collection. Attractively designed, conversational and informative.

    7. In the book so far I think it is an amazing book talking about climate change and saying what is it and why is it important.
